THE TONGUE

The power of life and death lies with the tongue
So would the Proverbs say
When it’s sharp; it kills
When it’s soothing; it heals

The tongue: ’tis an instrument
Of war and of peace
Its owner chooses which use to make of it -
To build or to destroy;
To gather or to scatter

Thousands have kissed their graves;
Hundreds have known troubles and bruises
For utterances known to be unguided
Yet wise men have known fame and glory
All for the use of their tongues

The world would know peace without compare
If only its inhabitants would stand and stare
When they know not what to say
